Winter ride to see snowy mountains
My route was to ride, battling against the wind, up the Valley of the Rhône and then across the Vaucluse in the foothills of Mt. Ventoux (1911 m.). Ventoux remains cloudy but there is actual snow covering the bright white karst of the rocky upper slopes. Frost at the side of the road to Sault around the Col des Abeilles (995 m.), even today there is a cyclist thick in black Lycra, battling the gradient and the bitter wind.

Bonnieux
My bike ride seeking the Provence of Peter Mayle. Thirty years on, it’s becoming difficult to find the charming Provence that beguiled the author Peter Mayle and made his book “A Year in Provence” a worldwide best-seller.
The French celebrate « La Chandeleur », the pagan festival of the end of winter, with a feast of pancakes. The Anglicans call this day Candlemas and light candles at midnight for purification. Pierre and Pascal treated members of AMA Provence to a feast of crêpes, there were rounds with meat, cheese, bananas flambé’d in rum, lemon and cheese.
First ride of 2019, an afternoon on my favourite training road, the Col de l’Espigoulier (723 m.), just outside of Marseille.
Ride out to La Ciotat, the small-scale Mediterranean port between Toulon and Marseille.
I'm riding light for a week on the mountain roads of the Alps. No laptop, although I do have my SLR camera but photos will have to wait till I'm back in Marseille..
I left Marseille for a long ride north via the Col de la Croix Haute (1179 m.) to Saint-Gervais under Mont Blanc. A bit of rain towards the end of the day which cleaned the Provence dust off my white leathers and boots but didn't soak me through.
